AuDHD, Missed Diagnoses & Why Our Preliminary Assessments Matter

Written on: 30 July 2025

In a recent Guardian article, the spotlight was turned on the rise in AuDHD diagnoses—the co-occurrence of Autism and ADHD—particularly among women and girls. Once considered rare, this dual diagnosis is now understood to be common, with research suggesting 50–70% of people with ADHD also meet criteria for Autism.

In the past, diagnostic pathways were designed with boys and men in mind and often only focused on one condition at a time.  This means that girls, women and people with more subtle or internalised presentations have not received timely accurate diagnoses, leading to years of confusion and anxiety.

At Shore Psychology, we understand that getting the right diagnosis is key to provide clarity and self-acceptance, helping individuals make sense of lifelong patterns and challenges, so they can access the right strategies and support.

At Shore Psychology, we’ve developed a Preliminary Assessment pathway to help people begin their diagnostic journey without immediately committing to the cost or intensity of a full assessment.

Whether you’re unsure if ADHD or Autism is relevant for you or your child—or you’ve been struggling to get a clear answer—our Preliminary Assessments offer a safe, professional starting point.

For £240, you’ll receive:

  • A 1.5-hour face-to-face appointment with one of our experienced clinicians
  • A review of pre-completed screening questionnaires
  • A detailed developmental and psychological history
  • Early-stage diagnostic questions in line with evidence-based assessment
  • Screening for both ADHD and Autism, regardless of which pathway you’re exploring

With your permission, we assess for both conditions because of their high rates of overlap (co-morbidity). This helps us tailor advice more accurately and ethically.

  • We don’t over-assess
If we believe a full diagnostic assessment isn’t warranted, we’ll say so—and explain why.
  • We screen for both ADHD & Autism
Even if you’re only seeking one, we look at both to ensure nothing is missed.
  • We provide written feedback
You’ll leave with a short summary of the session and clear guidance on your next steps—whether that includes further assessment or other support options.
